They did not know the LORD. 13: The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, 14: and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15: Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw." 16: And if the man said to him, "Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish," he would say, "No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force." 17: Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the LORD, for the men treated the offering of the LORD with contempt. 18: Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy clothed with a linen ephod. 19: And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20: Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, "May the LORD give you children by this woman for the petition she asked of the LORD." So then they would return to their home. 21: Indeed the LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the young man Samuel grew in the presence of the LORD. 22: Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23: And he said to them, "Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. 24: No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading abroad. 25: If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the LORD to put them to death. 26: Now the young man Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the LORD and also with man. 27: And there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, "Thus the LORD has said, 'Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh? 28: Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. 29: Why then do you scorn my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?' 30: Therefore the LORD the God of Israel declares: 'I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,' but now the LORD declares: 'Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31: Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32: Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. 33: The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants of your house shall die by the sword of men. 34: And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day. 35: And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever. 36: And everyone who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say, "Please put me in one of the priests' places, that I may eat a morsel of bread."'"

Psalms 31 1: TO THE CHOIRMASTER. A PSALM OF DAVID. In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me! 2: Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! 3: For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me; 4: you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge. 5: Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God. 6: I hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD. 7: I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have known the distress of my soul, 8: and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place. 9: Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye is wasted from grief; my soul and my body also. 10: For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away. 11: Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach, especially to my neighbors, and an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street flee from me. 12: I have been forgotten like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel. 13: For I hear the whispering of many- terror on every side!- as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life. 14: But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, "You are my God." 15: My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors! 16: Make your face shine on your servant; save me in your steadfast love! 17: O LORD, let me not be put to shame, for I call upon you; let the wicked be put to shame; let them go silently to Sheol. 18: Let the lying lips be mute, which speak insolently against the righteous in pride and contempt. 19: Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind! 20: In the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men; you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues. 21: Blessed be the LORD, for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city. 22: I had said in my alarm, "I am cut off from your sight." But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help. 23: Love the LORD, all you his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride. 24: Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD!

Psalms 40 1: TO THE CHOIRMASTER. A PSALM OF DAVID. I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2: He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. 3: He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. 4: Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! 5: You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. 6: Sacrifice and offering you have not desired, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. 7: Then I said, "Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me: 8: I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." 9: I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. 10: I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation. 11: As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me! 12: For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me. 13: Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me! 14: Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who desire my hurt! 15: Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, "Aha, Aha!" 16: But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, "Great is the LORD!" 17: As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!

Psalms 42 1: TO THE CHOIRMASTER. A MASKIL OF THE SONS OF KORAH. As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2: My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? 3: My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me continually, "Where is your God?" 4: These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival. 5: Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation 6: and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. 7: Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. 8: By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. 9: I say to God, my rock: "Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" 10: As with a deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me continually, "Where is your God?" 11: Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

Psalms 61 1: TO THE CHOIRMASTER: WITH STRINGED INSTRUMENTS. OF DAVID. Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; 2: from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, 3: for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. 4: Let me dwell in your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah 5: For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. 6: Prolong the life of the king; may his years endure to all generations! 7: May he be enthroned forever before God; appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him! 8: So will I ever sing praises to your name, as I perform my vows day after day.

Psalms 62 1: TO THE CHOIRMASTER: ACCORDING TO JEDUTHUN. A PSALM OF DAVID. For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. 2: He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. 3: How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? 4: They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah 5: For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. 6: He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. 7: On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. 8: Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah 9: Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath. 10: Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them. 11: Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God, 12: and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.

Psalms 71 1: In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame! 2: In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me! 3: Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. 4: Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man. 5: For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth. 6: Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother's womb. My praise is continually of you. 7: I have been as a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge. 8: My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day. 9: Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent. 10: For my enemies speak concerning me; those who watch for my life consult together 11: and say, "God has forsaken him; pursue and seize him, for there is none to deliver him." 12: O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me! 13: May my accusers be put to shame and consumed; with scorn and disgrace may they be covered who seek my hurt. 14: But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more. 15: My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. 16: With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. 17: O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. 18: So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. 19: Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like you? 20: You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. 21: You will increase my greatness and comfort me again. 22: I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praises to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. 23: My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed. 24: And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long, for they have been put to shame and disappointed who sought to do me hurt.

Psalms 78 1: A MASKIL OF ASAPH. Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! 2: I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, 3: things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. 4: We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. 5: He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, 6: that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, 7: so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; 8: and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God. 9: The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle. 10: They did not keep God's covenant, but refused to walk according to his law. 11: They forgot his works and the wonders that he had shown them. 12: In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan. 13: He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap. 14: In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light. 15: He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep. 16: He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers. 17: Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. 18: They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved. 19: They spoke against God, saying, "Can God spread a table in the wilderness? 20: He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?" 21: Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel, 22: because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power. 23: Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven, 24: and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. 25: Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance. 26: He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind; 27: he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas; 28: he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings. 29: And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved. 30: But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths, 31: the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel. 32: In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. 33: So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror. 34: When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. 35: They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. 36: But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. 37: Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. 38: Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath. 39: He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again. 40: How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert! 41: They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel. 42: They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe, 43: when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan. 44: He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams. 45: He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them. 46: He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust. 47: He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost. 48: He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts. 49: He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels. 50: He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague. 51: He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham. 52: Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. 53: He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. 54: And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won. 55: He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents. 56: Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God and did not keep his testimonies, 57: but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow. 58: For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols. 59: When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel. 60: He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind, 61: and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe. 62: He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage. 63: Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song. 64: Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation. 65: Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine. 66: And he put his adversaries to rout; he put them to everlasting shame. 67: He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim, 68: but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves. 69: He built his sanctuary like the high heavens, like the earth, which he has founded forever. 70: He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds; 71: from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, Israel his inheritance. 72: With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand.

Psalms 81 1: TO THE CHOIRMASTER: ACCORDING TO THE GITTITH. OF ASAPH. Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob! 2: Raise a song; sound the tambourine, the sweet lyre with the harp. 3: Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day. 4: For it is a statute for Israel, a rule of the God of Jacob. 5: He made it a decree in Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt. I hear a language I had not known: 6: "I relieved your shoulder of the burden; your hands were freed from the basket. 7: In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah 8: Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me! 9: There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god. 10: I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. 11: "But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. 12: So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. 13: Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways! 14: I would soon subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes. 15: Those who hate the LORD would cringe toward him, and their fate would last forever. 16: But he would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."

Psalms 89 1: A MASKIL OF ETHAN THE EZRAHITE. I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. 2: For I said, "Steadfast love will be built up forever; in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness." 3: You have said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: 4: 'I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.'"Selah 5: Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones! 6: For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD, 7: a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who are around him? 8: O LORD God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O LORD, with your faithfulness all around you? 9: You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them. 10: You crushed Rahab like a carcass; you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. 11: The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it, you have founded them. 12: The north and the south, you have created them; Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name. 13: You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand, high your right hand. 14: Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. 15: Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD, in the light of your face, 16: who exult in your name all the day and in your righteousness are exalted. 17: For you are the glory of their strength; by your favor our horn is exalted. 18: For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. 19: Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one, and said: "I have granted help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. 20: I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him, 21: so that my hand shall be established with him; my arm also shall strengthen him. 22: The enemy shall not outwit him; the wicked shall not humble him. 23: I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him. 24: My faithfulness and my steadfast love shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. 25: I will set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers. 26: He shall cry to me, 'You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.' 27: And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. 28: My steadfast love I will keep for him forever, and my covenant will stand firm for him. 29: I will establish his offspring forever and his throne as the days of the heavens. 30: If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules, 31: if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments, 32: then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes, 33: but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness. 34: I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. 35: Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. 36: His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me. 37: Like the moon it shall be established forever, a faithful witness in the skies." Selah 38: But now you have cast off and rejected; you are full of wrath against your anointed. 39: You have renounced the covenant with your servant; you have defiled his crown in the dust. 40: You have breached all his walls; you have laid his strongholds in ruins. 41: All who pass by plunder him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. 42: You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice. 43: You have also turned back the edge of his sword, and you have not made him stand in battle. 44: You have made his splendor to cease and cast his throne to the ground. 45: You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. Selah 46: How long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? 47: Remember how short my time is! For what vanity you have created all the children of man! 48: What man can live and never see death? Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah 49: Lord, where is your steadfast love of old, which by your faithfulness you swore to David? 50: Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked, and how I bear in my heart the insults of all the many nations, 51: with which your enemies mock, O LORD, with which they mock the footsteps of your anointed. 52: Blessed be the LORD forever! Psalms 92 1: A PSALM. A SONG FOR THE SABBATH. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; 2: to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, 3: to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. 4: For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. 5: How great are your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep! 6: The stupid man cannot know; the fool cannot understand this: 7: that though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction forever; 8: but you, O LORD, are on high forever. 9: For behold, your enemies, O LORD, for behold, your enemies shall perish; all evildoers shall be scattered. 10: But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have poured over me fresh oil. 11: My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants. 12: The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13: They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. 14: They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, 15: to declare that the LORD is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Psalms 94 1: O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! 2: Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! 3: O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? 4: They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. 5: They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. 6: They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; 7: and they say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive." 8: Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? 9: He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? 10: He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge- 11: the LORD- knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. 12: Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, 13: to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. 14: For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; 15: for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. 16: Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? 17: If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. 18: When I thought, "My foot slips," your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. 19: When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. 20: Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? 21: They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. 22: But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. 23: He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out.

Psalms 95 1: Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! 2: Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! 3: For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4: In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. 5: The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6: Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! 7: For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice, 8: do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, 9: when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work. 10: For forty years I loathed that generation and said, "They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways." 11: Therefore I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter my rest."

You are clothed with splendor and majesty, 2: covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent. 3: He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; 4: he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire. 5: He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved. 6: You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7: At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight. 8: The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them. 9: You set a boundary that they may not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth. 10: You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills; 11: they give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. 12: Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches. 13: From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work. 14: You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth 15: and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man's heart. 16: The trees of the LORD are watered abundantly, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. 17: In them the birds build their nests; the stork has her home in the fir trees. 18: The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers. 19: He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting. 20: You make darkness, and it is night, when all the beasts of the forest creep about. 21: The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God. 22: When the sun rises, they steal away and lie down in their dens. 23: Man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening. 24: O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25: Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great. 26: There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it. 27: These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. 28: When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. 29: When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. 30: When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground. 31: May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works, 32: who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke! 33: I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. 34: May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the LORD. 35: Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more! Bless the LORD, O my soul! Praise the LORD!

Psalms 105 1: Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 2: Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! 3: Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! 4: Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! 5: Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, 6: O offspring of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones! 7: He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. 8: He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, 9: the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, 10: which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, 11: saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance." 12: When they were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it, 13: wandering from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people, 14: he allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their account, 15: saying, "Touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets no harm!" 16: When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread, 17: he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. 18: His feet were hurt with fetters; his neck was put in a collar of iron; 19: until what he had said came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him. 20: The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free; 21: he made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions, 22: to bind his princes at his pleasure and to teach his elders wisdom. 23: Then Israel came to Egypt; Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. 24: And the LORD made his people very fruitful and made them stronger than their foes. 25: He turned their hearts to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants. 26: He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. 27: They performed his signs among them and miracles in the land of Ham. 28: He sent darkness, and made the land dark; they did not rebel against his words. 29: He turned their waters into blood and caused their fish to die. 30: Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings. 31: He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country. 32: He gave them hail for rain, and fiery lightning bolts through their land. 33: He struck down their vines and fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country. 34: He spoke, and the locusts came, young locusts without number, 35: which devoured all the vegetation in their land and ate up the fruit of their ground. 36: He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their strength. 37: Then he brought out Israel with silver and gold, and there was none among his tribes who stumbled. 38: Egypt was glad when they departed, for dread of them had fallen upon it. 39: He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night. 40: They asked, and he brought quail, and gave them bread from heaven in abundance. 41: He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed through the desert like a river. 42: For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham, his servant. 43: So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing. 44: And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples' toil, 45: that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise the LORD!

Psalms 114 1: When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, 2: Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion. 3: The sea looked and fled; Jordan turned back. 4: The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. 5: What ails you, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back? 6: O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs? 7: Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, 8: who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.

Psalms 137 1: By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion. 2: On the willows there we hung up our lyres. 3: For there our captors required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth, saying, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!" 4: How shall we sing the LORD's song in a foreign land? 5: If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill! 6: Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy! 7: Remember, O LORD, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem, how they said, "Lay it bare, lay it bare, down to its foundations!" 8: O daughter of Babylon, doomed to be destroyed, blessed shall he be who repays you with what you have done to us! 9: Blessed shall he be who takes your little ones and dashes them against the rock!

Psalms 144 1: OF DAVID.Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; 2: he is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me. 3: O LORD, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him? 4: Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow. 5: Bow your heavens, O LORD, and come down! Genesis 48 1: After this, Joseph was told, "Behold, your father is ill." So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2: And it was told to Jacob, "Your son Joseph has come to you." Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. 3: And Jacob said to Joseph, "God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4: and said to me, 'Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.' 5: And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. 6: And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. 7: As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)." 8: When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, "Who are these?" 9: Joseph said to his father, "They are my sons, whom God has given me here." And he said, "Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them." 10: Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them. 11: And Israel said to Joseph, "I never expected to see your face; and behold, God has let me see your offspring also." 12: Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13: And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near him. 14: And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn). 15: And he blessed Joseph and said, "The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day, 16: the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys; and in them let my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth." 17: When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. 18: And Joseph said to his father, "Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head." 19: But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations." 20: So he blessed them that day, saying, "By you Israel will pronounce blessings, saying, 'God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.'"Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21: Then Israel said to Joseph, "Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you again to the land of your fathers. 22: Moreover, I have given to you rather than to your brothers one mountain slope that I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow."

Genesis 49 1: Then Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you in days to come. 2: "Assemble and listen, O sons of Jacob, listen to Israel your father. 3: "Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the firstfruits of my strength, preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. 4: Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence, because you went up to your father's bed; then you defiled it- he went up to my couch! 5: "Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords. 6: Let my soul come not into their council; O my glory, be not joined to their company. For in their anger they killed men, and in their willfulness they hamstrung oxen. 7: Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel. 8: "Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down before you. 9: Judah is a lion's cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion and as a lioness; who dares rouse him? 10: The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. 11: Binding his foal to the vine and his donkey's colt to the choice vine, he has washed his garments in wine and his vesture in the blood of grapes. 12: His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk. 13: "Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea; he shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon. 14: "Issachar is a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds. 15: He saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant, so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant at forced labor. 16: "Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. 17: Dan shall be a serpent in the way, a viper by the path, that bites the horse's heels so that his rider falls backward. 18: I wait for your salvation, O LORD. 19: "Raiders shall raid Gad, but he shall raid at their heels. 20: "Asher's food shall be rich, and he shall yield royal delicacies. 21: "Naphtali is a doe let loose that bears beautiful fawns. 22: "Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a spring; his branches run over the wall. 23: The archers bitterly attacked him, shot at him, and harassed him severely, 24: yet his bow remained unmoved; his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel), 25: by the God of your father who will help you, by the Almighty who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb. 26: The blessings of your father are mighty beyond the blessings of my parents, up to the bounties of the everlasting hills. May they be on the head of Joseph, and on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers. 27: "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, in the morning devouring the prey and at evening dividing the spoil." 28: All these are the twelve tribes of Israel. This is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him. 29: Then he commanded them and said to them, "I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30: in the cave that is in the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 31: There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah- 32: the field and the cave that is in it were bought from the Hittites." 33: When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

Numbers 14 1: Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2: And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3: Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?" 4: And they said to one another, "Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt." 5: Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. 6: And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7: and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8: If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. 9: Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them." 10: Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel. 11: And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12: I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they." 13: But Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14: and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people. For you, O LORD, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15: Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16: 'It is because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.' 17: And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18: 'The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.' 19: Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now." 20: Then the LORD said, "I have pardoned, according to your word. 21: But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD, 22: none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, 23: shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. 24: But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. 25: Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea." 26: And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27: "How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. 28: Say to them, 'As I live, declares the LORD, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: 29: your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, 30: not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31: But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected. 32: But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. 33: And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. 34: According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.' 35: I, the LORD, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die." 36: And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land- 37: the men who brought up a bad report of the land- died by plague before the LORD. 38: Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive. 39: When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly. 40: And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, "Here we are. We will go up to the place that the LORD has promised, for we have sinned." 41: But Moses said, "Why now are you transgressing the command of the LORD, when that will not succeed? 42: Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. 43: For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you." 44: But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp. 45: Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to Hormah.

Numbers 27 1: Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2: And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the chiefs and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, 3: "Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin. And he had no sons. 4: Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father's brothers." 5: Moses brought their case before the LORD. 6: And the LORD said to Moses, 7: "The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. 8: And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, 'If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. 9: And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10: And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 11: And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel a statute and rule, as the LORD commanded Moses.'" 12: The LORD said to Moses, "Go up into this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I have given to the people of Israel. 13: When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14: because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes." (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) 15: Moses spoke to the LORD, saying, 16: "Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation 17: who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the LORD may not be as sheep that have no shepherd." 18: So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him. 19: Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall commission him in their sight. 20: You shall invest him with some of your authority, that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. 21: And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation." 22: And Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, 23: and he laid his hands on him and commissioned him as the LORD directed through Moses.

1 Chronicles 11 1: Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, "Behold, we are your bone and flesh. 2: In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD your God said to you, 'You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.'" 3: So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. 4: And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, that is Jebus, where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. 5: The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You will not come in here." Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. 6: David said, "Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and commander." And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. 7: And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. 8: And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. 9: And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him. 10: Now these are the chiefs of David's mighty men, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. 11: This is an account of David's mighty men: Jashobeam, a Hachmonite, was chief of the three. He wielded his spear against 300 whom he killed at one time. 12: And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite. 13: He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines were gathered there for battle. There was a plot of ground full of barley, and the men fled from the Philistines. 14: But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and killed the Philistines. And the LORD saved them by a great victory. 15: Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David at the cave of Adullam, when the army of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 16: David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. 17: And David said longingly, "Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!" 18: Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David. But David would not drink it. He poured it out to the LORD 19: and said, "Far be it from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men. 20: Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the thirty. And he wielded his spear against 300 men and killed them and won a name beside the three. 21: He was the most renowned of the thirty and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three. 22: And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. 23: And he struck down an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a spear like a weaver's beam, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. 24: These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and won a name beside the three mighty men. 25: He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard. 26: The mighty men were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, 27: Shammoth of Harod, Helez the Pelonite, 28: Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa, Abiezer of Anathoth, 29: Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite, 30: Maharai of Netophah, Heled the son of Baanah of Netophah, 31: Ithai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the people of Benjamin, Benaiah of Pirathon, 32: Hurai of the brooks of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, 33: Azmaveth of Baharum, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, 34: Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shagee the Hararite, 35: Ahiam the son of Sachar the Hararite, Eliphal the son of Ur, 36: Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite, 37: Hezro of Carmel, Naarai the son of Ezbai, 38: Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagri, 39: Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai of Beeroth, the armor-bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah, 40: Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 41: Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai, 42: Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a leader of the Reubenites, and thirty with him, 43: Hanan the son of Maacah, and Joshaphat the Mithnite, 44: Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite, 45: Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite, 46: Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai, and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite, 47: Eliel, and Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

1 Chronicles 17 1: Now when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, "Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent." 2: And Nathan said to David, "Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you." 3: But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, 4: "Go and tell my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD: It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in. 5: For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. 6: In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"' 7: Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel, 8: and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 9: And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly, 10: from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build you a house. 11: When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12: He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13: I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, 14: but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.'" 15: In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. 16: Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 17: And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also spoken of your servant's house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations, O LORD God! 18: And what more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant. 19: For your servant's sake, O LORD, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. 20: There is none like you, O LORD, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21: And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making for yourself a name for great and awesome things, in driving out nations before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22: And you made your people Israel to be your people forever, and you, O LORD, became their God. 23: And now, O LORD, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as you have spoken, 24: and your name will be established and magnified forever, saying, 'The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel's God,' and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 25: For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you. 26: And now, O LORD, you are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 27: Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you, for it is you, O LORD, who have blessed, and it is blessed forever."

2 Chronicles 18 1: Now Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor, and he made a marriage alliance with Ahab. 2: After some years he went down to Ahab in Samaria. And Ahab killed an abundance of sheep and oxen for him and for the people who were with him, and induced him to go up against Ramoth-gilead. 3: Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, "Will you go with me to Ramoth-gilead?" He answered him, "I am as you are, my people as your people. We will be with you in the war." 4: And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, "Inquire first for the word of the LORD." 5: Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, four hundred men, and said to them, "Shall we go to battle against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I refrain?" And they said, "Go up, for God will give it into the hand of the king." 6: But Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not here another prophet of the LORD of whom we may inquire?" 7: And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the LORD, Micaiah the son of Imlah; but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but always evil." And Jehoshaphat said, "Let not the king say so." 8: Then the king of Israel summoned an officer and said, "Bring quickly Micaiah the son of Imlah." 9: Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting on their thrones, arrayed in their robes. And they were sitting at the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets were prophesying before them. 10: And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made for himself horns of iron and said, "Thus says the LORD, 'With these you shall push the Syrians until they are destroyed.'" 11: And all the prophets prophesied so and said, "Go up to Ramoth-gilead and triumph. The LORD will give it into the hand of the king." 12: And the messenger who went to summon Micaiah said to him, "Behold, the words of the prophets with one accord are favorable to the king. Let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak favorably." 13: But Micaiah said, "As the LORD lives, what my God says, that I will speak." 14: And when he had come to the king, the king said to him, "Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I refrain?" And he answered, "Go up and triumph; they will be given into your hand." 15: But the king said to him, "How many times shall I make you swear that you speak to me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD?" 16: And he said, "I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. And the LORD said, 'These have no master; let each return to his home in peace.'" 17: And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Did I not tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?" 18: And Micaiah said, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left. 19: And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab the king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?' And one said one thing, and another said another. 20: Then a spirit came forward and stood before the LORD, saying, 'I will entice him.' And the LORD said to him, 'By what means?' 21: And he said, 'I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' And he said, 'You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.' 22: Now therefore behold, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these your prophets. The LORD has declared disaster concerning you." 23: Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, "Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go from me to speak to you?" 24: And Micaiah said, "Behold, you shall see on that day when you go into an inner chamber to hide yourself." 25: And the king of Israel said, "Seize Micaiah and take him back to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king's son, 26: and say, 'Thus says the king, Put this fellow in prison and feed him with meager rations of bread and water until I return in peace.'" 27: And Micaiah said, "If you return in peace, the LORD has not spoken by me." And he said, "Hear, all you peoples!" 28: So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead. 29: And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "I will disguise myself and go into battle, but you wear your robes." And the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle. 30: Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his chariots, "Fight with neither small nor great, but only with the king of Israel." 31: As soon as the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, "It is the king of Israel." So they turned to fight against him. And Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; God drew them away from him. 32: For as soon as the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him. 33: But a certain man drew his bow at random and struck the king of Israel between the scale armor and the breastplate. Therefore he said to the driver of his chariot, "Turn around and carry me out of the battle, for I am wounded." 34: And the battle continued that day, and the king of Israel was propped up in his chariot facing the Syrians until evening. Then at sunset he died.

Psalms 23 1: A PSALM OF DAVID.The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2: He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3: He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Jeremiah 23 1: "Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!" declares the LORD. 2: Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: "You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the LORD. 3: Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4: I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the LORD. 5: "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6: In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The LORD is our righteousness.' 7: "Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they shall no longer say, 'As the LORD lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,' 8: but 'As the LORD lives who brought up and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them.' Then they shall dwell in their own land." 9: Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of the LORD and because of his holy words. 10: For the land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land mourns, and the pastures of the wilderness are dried up. Their course is evil, and their might is not right. 11: "Both prophet and priest are ungodly; even in my house I have found their evil, declares the LORD. 12: Therefore their way shall be to them like slippery paths in the darkness, into which they shall be driven and fall, for I will bring disaster upon them in the year of their punishment, declares the LORD. 13: In the prophets of Samaria I saw an unsavory thing: they prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. 14: But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his evil; all of them have become like Sodom to me, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah." 15: Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets: "Behold, I will feed them with bitter food and give them poisoned water to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has gone out into all the land." 16: Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. 17: They say continually to those who despise the word of the LORD, 'It shall be well with you'; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, 'No disaster shall come upon you.'" 18: For who among them has stood in the council of the LORD to see and to hear his word, or who has paid attention to his word and listened? 19: Behold, the storm of the LORD! Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest; it will burst upon the head of the wicked. 20: The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he has executed and accomplished the intents of his heart. In the latter days you will understand it clearly. 21: "I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. 22: But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds. 23: "Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God afar off? 24: Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD. 25: I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, 'I have dreamed, I have dreamed!' 26: How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, 27: who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal? 28: Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the LORD. 29: Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? 30: Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, declares the LORD, who steal my words from one another. 31: Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the LORD, who use their tongues and declare, 'declares the LORD.' 32: Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the LORD, and who tell them and lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or charge them. So they do not profit this people at all, declares the LORD. 33: "When one of this people, or a prophet or a priest asks you, 'What is the burden of the LORD?' you shall say to them, 'You are the burden, and I will cast you off, declares the LORD.' 34: And as for the prophet, priest, or one of the people who says, 'The burden of the LORD,' I will punish that man and his household. 35: Thus shall you say, every one to his neighbor and every one to his brother, 'What has the LORD answered?' or 'What has the LORD spoken?' 36: But 'the burden of the LORD' you shall mention no more, for the burden is every man's own word, and you pervert the words of the living God, the LORD of hosts, our God. 37: Thus you shall say to the prophet, 'What has the LORD answered you?' or 'What has the LORD spoken?' 38: But if you say, 'The burden of the LORD,' thus says the LORD, 'Because you have said these words, "The burden of the LORD," when I sent to you, saying, "You shall not say, 'The burden of the LORD,'" 39: therefore, behold, I will surely lift you up and cast you away from my presence, you and the city that I gave to you and your fathers. 40: And I will bring upon you everlasting reproach and perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.'"

Ezekiel 34 1: The word of the LORD came to me: 2: "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord GOD: Ah, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding yourselves! Should not shepherds feed the sheep? 3: You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fat ones, but you do not feed the sheep. 4: The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, the injured you have not bound up, the strayed you have not brought back, the lost you have not sought, and with force and harshness you have ruled them. 5: So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and they became food for all the wild beasts. 6: My sheep were scattered; they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, with none to search or seek for them. 7: "Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: 8: As I live, declares the Lord GOD, surely because my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd, and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep, 9: therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: 10: Thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require my sheep at their hand and put a stop to their feeding the sheep. No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them. 11: "For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. 12: As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13: And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14: I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land. There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. 15: I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. 16: I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice. 17: "As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and male goats. 18: Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture; and to drink of clear water, that you must muddy the rest of the water with your feet? 19: And must my sheep eat what you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have muddied with your feet? 20: "Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD to them: Behold, I, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21: Because you push with side and shoulder, and thrust at all the weak with your horns, till you have scattered them abroad, 22: I will rescue my flock; they shall no longer be a prey. And I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23: And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24: And I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the LORD; I have spoken. 25: "I will make with them a covenant of peace and banish wild beasts from the land, so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. 26: And I will make them and the places all around my hill a blessing, and I will send down the showers in their season; they shall be showers of blessing. 27: And the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield its increase, and they shall be secure in their land. And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I break the bars of their yoke, and deliver them from the hand of those who enslaved them. 28: They shall no more be a prey to the nations, nor shall the beasts of the land devour them. They shall dwell securely, and none shall make them afraid. 29: And I will provide for them renowned plantations so that they shall no more be consumed with hunger in the land, and no longer suffer the reproach of the nations. 30: And they shall know that I am the LORD their God with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, declares the Lord GOD. 31: And you are my sheep, human sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Lord GOD."

Micah 5 1: Now muster your troops, O daughter of troops; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek. 2: But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. 3: Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. 4: And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. 5: And he shall be their peace. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men; 6: they shall shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod at its entrances; and he shall deliver us from the Assyrian when he comes into our land and treads within our border. 7: Then the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which delay not for a man nor wait for the children of man. 8: And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among the flocks of sheep, which, when it goes through, treads down and tears in pieces, and there is none to deliver. 9: Your hand shall be lifted up over your adversaries, and all your enemies shall be cut off. 10: And in that day, declares the LORD, I will cut off your horses from among you and will destroy your chariots; 11: and I will cut off the cities of your land and throw down all your strongholds; 12: and I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no more tellers of fortunes; 13: and I will cut off your carved images and your pillars from among you, and you shall bow down no more to the work of your hands; 14: and I will root out your Asherah images from among you and destroy your cities. 15: And in anger and wrath I will execute vengeance on the nations that did not obey.

Psalms 27 1: OF DAVID.The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2: When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. 3: Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. 4: One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. 5: For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. 6: And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD. 7: Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! 8: You have said, "Seek my face." My heart says to you, "Your face, LORD, do I seek." 9: Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! 10: For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in. 11: Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. 12: Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. 13: I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! 14: Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

Deuteronomy 4 1: "And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2: You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you. 3: Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor. 4: But you who held fast to the LORD your God are all alive today. 5: See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 6: Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.' 7: For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8: And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? 9: "Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children- 10: how on the day that you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, 'Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.' 11: And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom. 12: Then the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice. 13: And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14: And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in the land that you are going over to possess. 15: "Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since you saw no form on the day that the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, 16: beware lest you act corruptly by making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, 17: the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, 18: the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth. 19: And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. 20: But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of his own inheritance, as you are this day. 21: Furthermore, the LORD was angry with me because of you, and he swore that I should not cross the Jordan, and that I should not enter the good land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance. 22: For I must die in this land; I must not go over the Jordan. But you shall go over and take possession of that good land. 23: Take care, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make a carved image, the form of anything that the LORD your God has forbidden you. 24: For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. 25: "When you father children and children's children, and have grown old in the land, if you act corruptly by making a carved image in the form of anything, and by doing what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, so as to provoke him to anger, 26: I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish from the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess. You will not live long in it, but will be utterly destroyed. 27: And the LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD will drive you. 28: And there you will serve gods of wood and stone, the work of human hands, that neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. 29: But from there you will seek the LORD your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30: When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the LORD your God and obey his voice. 31: For the LORD your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them. 32: "For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of. 33: Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live? 34: Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35: To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides him. 36: Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. 37: And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, 38: driving out before you nations greater and mightier than yourselves, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, 39: know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. 40: Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for all time." 41: Then Moses set apart three cities in the east beyond the Jordan, 42: that the manslayer might flee there, anyone who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without being at enmity with him in time past; he may flee to one of these cities and save his life: 43: Bezer in the wilderness on the tableland for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites. 44: This is the law that Moses set before the people of Israel. 45: These are the testimonies, the statutes, and the rules, which Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they came out of Egypt, 46: beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the people of Israel defeated when they came out of Egypt. 47: And they took possession of his land and the land of Og, the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who lived to the east beyond the Jordan; 48: from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, as far as Mount Sirion (that is, Hermon), 49: together with all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

Jeremiah 31 1: "At that time, declares the LORD, I will be the God of all the clans of Israel, and they shall be my people." 2: Thus says the LORD: "The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, 3: the LORD appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. 4: Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. 5: Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant and shall enjoy the fruit. 6: For there shall be a day when watchmen will call in the hill country of Ephraim: 'Arise, and let us go up to Zion, to the LORD our God.'" 7: For thus says the LORD: "Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, 'O LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel.' 8: Behold, I will bring them from the north country and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, the pregnant woman and her who is in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9: With weeping they shall come, and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble, for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. 10: "Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, 'He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock.' 11: For the LORD has ransomed Jacob and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him. 12: They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the LORD, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall be like a watered garden, and they shall languish no more. 13: Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow. 14: I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, declares the LORD." 15: Thus says the LORD: "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more." 16: Thus says the LORD: "Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work, declares the LORD, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy. 17: There is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children shall come back to their own country. 18: I have heard Ephraim grieving, 'You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined, like an untrained calf; bring me back that I may be restored, for you are the LORD my God. 19: For after I had turned away, I relented, and after I was instructed, I slapped my thigh; I was ashamed, and I was confounded, because I bore the disgrace of my youth.' 20: Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he my darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, declares the LORD. 21: "Set up road markers for yourself; make yourself guideposts; consider well the highway, the road by which you went. Return, O virgin Israel, return to these your cities. 22: How long will you waver, O faithless daughter? For the LORD has created a new thing on the earth: a woman encircles a man." 23: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I restore their fortunes: "' The LORD bless you, O habitation of righteousness, O holy hill!' 24: And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and the farmers and those who wander with their flocks. 25: For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish." 26: At this I awoke and looked, and my sleep was pleasant to me. 27: "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast. 28: And it shall come to pass that as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring harm, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, declares the LORD. 29: In those days they shall no longer say: "' The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.' 30: But everyone shall die for his own sin. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge. 31: "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32: not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. 33: But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34: And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." 35: Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar- the LORD of hosts is his name: 36: "If this fixed order departs from before me, declares the LORD, then shall the offspring of Israel cease from being a nation before me forever." 37: Thus says the LORD: "If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below can be explored, then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done, declares the LORD." 38: "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when the city shall be rebuilt for the LORD from the tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. 39: And the measuring line shall go out farther, straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah. 40: The whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be sacred to the LORD. It shall not be uprooted or overthrown anymore forever."

Isaiah 54 1: "Sing, O barren one, who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of her who is married," says the LORD. 2: "Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. 3: For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left, and your offspring will possess the nations and will people the desolate cities. 4: "Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more. 5: For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. 6: For the LORD has called you like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is cast off, says your God. 7: For a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you. 8: In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you," says the LORD, your Redeemer. 9: "This is like the days of Noah to me: as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, and will not rebuke you. 10: For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you. 11: "O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in antimony, and lay your foundations with sapphires. 12: I will make your pinnacles of agate, your gates of carbuncles, and all your wall of precious stones. 13: All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children. 14: In righteousness you shall be established; you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; and from terror, for it shall not come near you. 15: If anyone stirs up strife, it is not from me; whoever stirs up strife with you shall fall because of you. 16: Behold, I have created the smith who blows the fire of coals and produces a weapon for its purpose. I have also created the ravager to destroy; 17: no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, declares the LORD."

Isaiah 5 1: Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. 2: He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. 3: And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4: What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? 5: And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. 6: I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. 7: For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry! 8: Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is no more room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land. 9: The LORD of hosts has sworn in my hearing: "Surely many houses shall be desolate, large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant. 10: For ten acres of vineyard shall yield but one bath, and a homer of seed shall yield but an ephah." 11: Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening as wine inflames them! 12: They have lyre and harp, tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts, but they do not regard the deeds of the LORD, or see the work of his hands. 13: Therefore my people go into exile for lack of knowledge; their honored men go hungry, and their multitude is parched with thirst. 14: Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite and opened its mouth beyond measure, and the nobility of Jerusalem and her multitude will go down, her revelers and he who exults in her. 15: Man is humbled, and each one is brought low, and the eyes of the haughty are brought low. 16: But the LORD of hosts is exalted in justice, and the Holy God shows himself holy in righteousness. 17: Then shall the lambs graze as in their pasture, and nomads shall eat among the ruins of the rich. 18: Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, who draw sin as with cart ropes, 19: who say: "Let him be quick, let him speed his work that we may see it; let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near, and let it come, that we may know it!" 20: Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 21: Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight! 22: Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and valiant men in mixing strong drink, 23: who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of his right! 24: Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root will be as rottenness, and their blossom go up like dust; for they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. 25: Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people, and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them, and the mountains quaked; and their corpses were as refuse in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. 26: He will raise a signal for nations afar off, and whistle for them from the ends of the earth; and behold, quickly, speedily they come! 27: None is weary, none stumbles, none slumbers or sleeps, not a waistband is loose, not a sandal strap broken; 28: their arrows are sharp, all their bows bent, their horses' hoofs seem like flint, and their wheels like the whirlwind. 29: Their roaring is like a lion, like young lions they roar; they growl and seize their prey; they carry it off, and none can rescue. 30: They will growl over it on that day, like the growling of the sea. And if one looks to the land, behold, darkness and distress; and the light is darkened by its clouds.

Exodus 32 1: When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, "Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." 2: So Aaron said to them, "Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me." 3: So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4: And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!" 5: When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made proclamation and said, "Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD." 6: And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. 7: And the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. 8: They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!'" 9: And the LORD said to Moses, "I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people. 10: Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you." 11: But Moses implored the LORD his God and said, "O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12: Why should the Egyptians say, 'With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people. 13: Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.'" 14: And the LORD relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people. 15: Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets that were written on both sides; on the front and on the back they were written. 16: The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 17: When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, "There is a noise of war in the camp." 18: But he said, "It is not the sound of shouting for victory, or the sound of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing that I hear." 19: And as soon as he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20: He took the calf that they had made and burned it with fire and ground it to powder and scattered it on the water and made the people of Israel drink it. 21: And Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people do to you that you have brought such a great sin upon them?" 22: And Aaron said, "Let not the anger of my lord burn hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. 23: For they said to me, 'Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.' 24: So I said to them, 'Let any who have gold take it off.' So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf." 25: And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to the derision of their enemies), 26: then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, "Who is on the LORD's side? Come to me." And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. 27: And he said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Put your sword on your side each of you, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his companion and his neighbor.'" 28: And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And that day about three thousand men of the people fell. 29: And Moses said, "Today you have been ordained for the service of the LORD, each one at the cost of his son and of his brother, so that he might bestow a blessing upon you this day." 30: The next day Moses said to the people, "You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin." 31: So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Alas, this people have sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold. 32: But now, if you will forgive their sin- but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written." 33: But the LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book. 34: But now go, lead the people to the place about which I have spoken to you; behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them." 35: Then the LORD sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made.

Psalms 100 1: A PSALM FOR GIVING THANKS. Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! 2: Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! 3: Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! 5: For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Hosea 1 1: The word of the LORD that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel. 2: When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea, "Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the LORD." 3: So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son. 4: And the LORD said to him, "Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5: And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel." 6: She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the LORD said to him, "Call her name No Mercy, for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all. 7: But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the LORD their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen." 8: When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son. 9: And the LORD said, "Call his name Not My People, for you are not my people, and I am not your God." 10: Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, "You are not my people," it shall be said to them, "Children of the living God." 11: And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel. Hosea 2 1: Say to your brothers, "You are my people," and to your sisters, "You have received mercy." 2: "Plead with your mother, plead- for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband- that she put away her whoring from her face, and her adultery from between her breasts; 3: lest I strip her naked and make her as in the day she was born, and make her like a wilderness, and make her like a parched land, and kill her with thirst. 4: Upon her children also I will have no mercy, because they are children of whoredom. 5: For their mother has played the whore; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, 'I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.' 6: Therefore I will hedge up her way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, so that she cannot find her paths. 7: She shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and she shall seek them but shall not find them. Then she shall say, 'I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now.' 8: And she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished on her silver and gold, which they used for Baal. 9: Therefore I will take back my grain in its time, and my wine in its season, and I will take away my wool and my flax, which were to cover her nakedness. 10: Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall rescue her out of my hand. 11: And I will put an end to all her mirth, her feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her appointed feasts. 12: And I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she said, 'These are my wages, which my lovers have given me.' I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall devour them. 13: And I will punish her for the feast days of the Baals when she burned offerings to them and adorned herself with her ring and jewelry, and went after her lovers and forgot me, declares the LORD. 14: "Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. 15: And there I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth, as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt. 16: "And in that day, declares the LORD, you will call me 'My Husband,' and no longer will you call me 'My Baal.' 17: For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. 18: And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety. 19: And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20: I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the LORD. 21: "And in that day I will answer, declares the LORD, I will answer the heavens, and they shall answer the earth, 22: and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil, and they shall answer Jezreel, 23: and I will sow her for myself in the land. And I will have mercy on No Mercy, and I will say to Not My People, 'You are my people'; and he shall say, 'You are my God.'" Hosea 3 1: And the LORD said to me, "Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the LORD loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins." 2: So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a lethech of barley. 3: And I said to her, "You must dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the whore, or belong to another man; so will I also be to you." 4: For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods. 5: Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the LORD and to his goodness in the latter days.

Isaiah 11 1: There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. 2: And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3: And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4: but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5: Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins. 6: The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. 7: The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8: The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. 9: They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. 10: In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples- of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious. 11: In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea. 12: He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. 13: The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, and those who harass Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not harass Ephraim. 14: But they shall swoop down on the shoulder of the Philistines in the west, and together they shall plunder the people of the east. They shall put out their hand against Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites shall obey them. 15: And the LORD will utterly destroy the tongue of the Sea of Egypt, and will wave his hand over the River with his scorching breath, and strike it into seven channels, and he will lead people across in sandals. 16: And there will be a highway from Assyria for the remnant that remains of his people, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.

Psalms 118 1: Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! 2: Let Israel say, "His steadfast love endures forever." 3: Let the house of Aaron say, "His steadfast love endures forever." 4: Let those who fear the LORD say, "His steadfast love endures forever." 5: Out of my distress I called on the LORD; the LORD answered me and set me free. 6: The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? 7: The LORD is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. 8: It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. 9: It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. 10: All nations surrounded me; in the name of the LORD I cut them off! 11: They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side; in the name of the LORD I cut them off! 12: They surrounded me like bees; they went out like a fire among thorns; in the name of the LORD I cut them off! 13: I was pushed hard, so that I was falling, but the LORD helped me. 14: The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. 15: Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous: "The right hand of the LORD does valiantly, 16: the right hand of the LORD exalts, the right hand of the LORD does valiantly!" 17: I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the LORD. 18: The LORD has disciplined me severely, but he has not given me over to death. 19: Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD. 20: This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous shall enter through it. 21: I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. 22: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23: This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. 24: This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25: Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! 26: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. 27: The LORD is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! 28: You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. 29: Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
